About Aurangabad

Aurangabad is a city situated in west central Maharashtra. Aurangabad was originally named Khadki and was established in the early 16th century by Malik Ambar, a prime minister of Nizamshahi of Ahmednagar. Ambar’s son and successor, Fateh Khan renamed the town as Fatehnagar. Later, in the mid 17th century, Aurangzeb arrived here as the Viceroy of the Deccan and changed the town's name to Aurangabad.


Aurangabad is considered a key production centre of cotton textile and artistic silk fabrics. It is the largest city in the Marathwada region and is surrounded by the hills. The world famous Ajanta and Ellora caves, both of which are UNESCO World heritage sites, are in Aurangabad. Bibi Ka Maqbara

Bibi Ka Maqbara is a beautiful mausoleum of Rabia-ul-Daurani, also known as Dilras Banu Begum, the wife of the Mughal Emperor Aurangazeb. This mausoleum is believed to be constructed by Prince Azam Shah in memory of his mother between 1651 and 1661 A.D. This mausoleum draws inspiration from the Taj Mahal in Agra. Bibi ka Maqbara is hence popularly called the Taj of the Deccan. Situated about 3 km from the city, this monument is made using exquisite marble and ornamented with intricate designs.
