About Port Blair

Port Blair, the heart of Andaman, has a rich history. The Government of Bengal first established a penal colony in the southeast bay of Great Andaman in 1789 and named it Port Blair to honour Lieutenant Archibald Blair of the British East India Company. Two years later, the colony was shifted to the northeast region of Great Andaman and was renamed Port Cornwallis to pay tribute to Admiral William Cornwallis. However, due to a rise in death and disease caused by unfavourable climate, the colony was abandoned in 1796.The first revolt by Indian sepoys in 1857, revolt gave the British an excuse to reinstate the penal colony on the islands. The Cellular Jail, a crucial part of Port Blairís history, was constructed around 1906, to imprison political freedom fighters as a part of this colony. Azad Hind Government established its headquarters in 1943-44 under the leadership of Subhas Chandra Bose at Port Blair.Today, Port Blair is the capital of the Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and its most widely visited place of tourist attraction. The island is a paradise of biodiversity encompassed by a craggy coastline and a dense tropical forest. Port Blair is worth visiting for its historical sites, sandy beaches and lush parks; there are also plenty of water-based sports such as snorkelling, scuba diving, and parasailing to be enjoyed. The coast is enriched with coral reefs, and if you are lucky, you will be able to spot sea turtles. The city is home to several ethnic groups, the main ones being Andamanese, Jarawa, Onge, Sentinalese, Shompen, and Nicobari. A chunk of the population also trace their lineage to Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and southern India. The most spoken language in the region is Bengali, followed by Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and English.
