Dibrugarh is a quaint and beautiful city located in the upper Assam region on the banks of the River Brahmaputra. It is known as the “Tea City of India,” and is the gateway to three tea-producing districts, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Sivasagar. These three centres together account for about 50 per cent of India’s Assam tea production.

There are several theories as to the origin of the name Dibrugarh, the most common being that it was derived from Dibarumukh, an encampment of Ahoms during the Ahom-Chutia war. It is also said that the name is inspired by the Dimasa language, in which “‘Dibru” means “blister,” and “garh” means “fort.” A third version claims that it was named Dibrugarh when the British took over the region and constructed a fort on the River Dibaru.

The present-day Dibrugarh is known as one of the largest producers of tea. Oil and timber are the other two major industries in the city. It is a treat for travellers and tourists who are inclined to explore nature in all its glory, from lush green tea estates to dense wildlife sanctuaries.
