Johzankei Hotel

The hotel appears to be one of the first in the area. It is a little more dated feeling about 30 years old. This is the biggest knock on the place. The onsen has two areas, which they rotate several times daily for the men and the women to switch. The nice part about this is you get exposed to two different areas. The negative is the effort to change. The two onsens are very different. The first is very tight and intimate with a dry sauna. The second is expansive with more details on the wall. It has a steam room which is very simple and not at all fancy. Although this second onsen has more unique details, many tiles are missing showing significant wear. Both onsens have an outdoor area, but there is no seats. Something unusual for Americans is that the windows are see through and there are hotels that you can see (and they can see you). You can always stay more inward to avoid being seen, but then again, you are naked around a bunch of strangers inside anyways. The people who work there are very friendly and are more than happy to help. Also, the patrons are very friendly and are not afraid to kindly let you know the intricate procedures. I read a lot online to prepare for my first onsen experience, but somethings you just can't know or catch.
