We were in one of the renovated rooms. It was really nice! The view was amazing (if you ignore the cars and public bathrooms)! We loved that you could see the view from the shower in the back 1/3 of the room! The floor wasn't as clean as I'd want and there was no body soap in the shower (so we had to ask for some), but we loved the location. We also enjoyed exploring this quirky hotel. The pool is in a funny location, there are old paths from the original footprint and the roof top deck wasn't being used (seems like a nice place for a bar or restaurant)! While they renovate, we hope they make better use of the lost space above the street level parking lot. The location was amazing, but it's true that the sea lions can be loud. Obviously not the hotel's fault and ear plugs helped. The lattes at the Parakeet Cafe were really good, but the lack of pastries was a bit disappointing (no croissants?). I like that they're updating to the European style of needing the room card to turn on the lights, but the motion sensors in the bathroom were kind of annoying when one person is trying to sleep.

Motel 6 quality, at best. My wife and I joked that it reminded us of some youth hostels we once stayed at in Central Asia. I had a stomach full of regret instantly after seeing the room. The location is cool, and the view is nice, though not truly oceanfront - more like ocean-facing with a busy road and park with some buildings in between. The walls were paper thin and we heard all the neighbors all. night. long. Like a bowling ball being dropped on the floor above us, and then a soccer match. I will say the staff were friendly during check-in and out, but...live and learn. Hopefully others can learn from me and go somewhere else. There are so many other good places in La Jolla, and none are more than few steps from fantastic restaurants and cafes with beautiful views. I'd spend the money on a better quality hotel - probably any of them in La Jolla - even if it was a few blocks inland or didn't have "oceanfront" in the description.

The photos on website do NOT accurately depict the rooms. We stayed in an ocean view suite (#805) and paid over $400 a night for a completely DIVE hotel. It looks like nothing has been updated or repaired since the 80's... and it was DIRTY. The location is great. The view is great. The beds we comfortable but I would NEVER stay here again... even it was $100 a night. Bonus, they're doing construction on the walkway behind our room so the jack hammer started at 8am on Saturday! 15 minutes later there was an electric saw or leaf blowing going right down below us. The whole thing was a crazy experience at luxury pricing. What a rip off.
