Rixwell Old Riga Palace Hotel

Not my place! But lets start from the beginning. As the first impression counts i needed to wait in the lobby as no one was at the reception. After 10 minutes of waiting i found a girl in the next room behind the bar and after 5 more minutes she joined me at the reception to handle my booking. She needed my credit card for minibar reasons and i can not 100% tell if she wrote all the details of my card on a paper or not as she was doing it below the table. I booked a "design room" which is located in the next building. But the room was not like being shown in the pictures. Fancy wooden design wheels hanging from the floor and all it all images promised a bit of space. But it was not like that. A really small room in which i felt uncomfortable from the first second on. Unfortunately the floor and the ceiling are so thin that you really hear every step from the people above like a storm! Creaking included as the building is so very old. That also means that in winter the rooms gets freaky cold when you don't turn on your heater right beside your bed. For winter they offer very thin blankets which i also didn't like. The next shocking experience happened when i entered the shower. The ceiling was nearly all black due to mold everywhere. Now i know where that weird smell in the room came from. The height of the shower was 1,80m maybe 1,85m so i was not able to stand straight while showering. After showering someone from the staff knocked on my door asking if i would smoke in the room as the fire detectors caused an alarm. A second lady knocked on my door one minute later asking the same. I replied that no one around my room would be smoking as i was pretty sure to hear every step due to the creaking floor. She told me that the alarm was caused in my room and i told her i just had a shower so that i am sure that the smoke detectors are damaged. She regretted. So after all it seems that smoke detectors react at shower steam which makes of course a lot of sense. I went to the reception demanding another room and the staff were quite helpful promising me another room in the afternoon. I complained about the heavy noises of steps above me and staff guaranteed to give me a room on a higher floor lever with no one above me. I came back in the afternoon and i was told that all these rooms are now booked and they will give me another room in the main building. The room was much better even though it was a "standard room" which would be cheaper to book then a "design room". But the problems stayed the same. Thin ceilings so that you hear all the steps from above and even around you. No sleep until 1:30am possible! Also thanks to the dude in the next room who i was able to hear very well due to his snoring. All in all this building should not allow to run a hotel. It is really horrible to stay here. Also the personal taste of " design" rooms and "standard rooms" need to be discussed. Mold in rooms should not occure especially for health reasons. I will surely never come back!

We were given a room in the new annex. The ceiling was so low that you couldn't take a proper shower. Not me and especially not my husband. Breakfast was really basic.
