About Kolkata

The capital of the state of West Bengal, Kolkata is one of the largest cities in India and an important port. Stretching around 154 km from the head of the Bay of Bengal, along the eastern bank of the Hooghly river, Kolkata once served as the capital of the British from 1772 to 1911. Despite widespread urbanisation, the city retains its old-world charm, with its Colonial-era buildings, gardens, historical institutions, and art galleries, which speak of its art and literary legacy. The three villages of Kalikata, Gobindapur, and Sutanuti used to comprise the city of Kolkata. The British established a factory in Sutanuti in 1686 as part of their plans to expand operations over the country. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, West Bengal saw the arrival of the Portuguese, Dutch, French, and Danes. Soon, the three villages became important centres of trade. Between 1830 to 1930, the city witnessed widespread protests against British rule. Popularly known as the “City of Joy”, the cosmopolitan city is known for its lavish Durga Puja celebrations, book fairs, film clubs, and diverse cuisine. Besides sightseeing, the cosmopolitan city offers ample opportunities for history, art, and culture lovers to explore its cultural institution and take part in events, such as book fairs, music concerts, art exhibitions, and Durga Puja celebrations. Locals mostly speak Bangla and English in the city. Food enthusiasts can look forward to trying local favourites, such as macher jhol, kosha mangsho, shukto, cholar dal, mishti doi, and chom chom.
