A cheap and cheerful hostel that was clean and warm. Shared bathrooms were never messy and the dining room was tidy every time I went in. Kitchen was a small space for so many people but in general was tidy and clean. For location it was perfect for the old town and harbour both of which were a five minutes walk. To get to the cathedral it was a little longer and uphill but very manageable in 15 minutes. On terms of a base to explore from it is ideal and although not a luxurious place it served it's purpose perfectly. Only downside is the hallways echo every footstep or voice but it's an old building and can't be prevented and I have stayed in 5 star hotels where it was a bigger issue.

The rooms are very minimalistic, but if you are there to save money and see Reykjavik, the price and location cannot be beat. Shared bathrooms, but that's a non issue if you go in the off season. The biggest bathrooms are at the end of the hall closest to the stairs. If you want more room, especially when you shower, use those! I stayed in a room with a Queen size bed. It was comfy to sleep on, the staff there are friendly but leave you alone unless you approach them. Great shared space downstairs, and a shared kitchen if you want to cook. Again, going in the off season makes a huge difference. I never really ran into anyone or had to wait to use any facilities because I went in late September.

My husband and I stayed there for two nights. The room was good with a comfortable bed. Their rooms don't have private bathrooms and toilets however shared ones were in very good condition: clean, and not constantly occupied, so it wasn't a problem for us. The staff was friendly. The only con is that the staff asked not to slam the doors however only one who slammed the doors was the staff while cleaning service.
