About Leh Airport

The official name for the Leh airport is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IATA code: IXL). It is located at an altitude of 3,256 m above sea level and is the highest airfield in India . It is a domestic airport named in honour of a Ladakhi leader and monk. The airport, located at a distance of about 2.6 km from the city centre, has only one terminal with 5 security checks and 10 check-in counters . Flights can take off and land only in the mornings as strong mountain winds blow during the afternoons. It was handed over to the Airports Authority of India in February 2016 by the Indian Air Force. Three airlines; Air India, GoAir, and Vistara, operate scheduled flights at the Leh airport. The runway is approximately 2700 m long, but the landing is exceptionally challenging given the undulated mountain terrain. Therefore, every pilot operating flights in this area undergoes strenuous training to handle the worst possible scenarios. Due to its close proximity to the Indo-Pak border, security is stringent and hand luggage is not permitted. Nestled between the Himalayan mountains, the flightís arrival at this airport is marked by breathtaking beauty. The facilities provided at the airport include a baby care room, a child care room, ATMs, help counters, and a smoking zone . State-owned transport buses as well as prepaid taxis are available at the airport.
